The Mysterious Crystal
For centuries, people have been fascinated by crystals. These beautiful objects have been used in everything from jewelry to art. But what are they, really? And where do they come from?
A Brief History of Crystals
Crystals have been used by humans for centuries, dating back to the Stone Age. Early humans probably used crystals for decorative purposes, as many cultures still do today. In fact, some of the oldest examples of human art are carved crystals!
As time went on, people began to associate crystals with mystical properties. For example, the ancient Egyptians used lapis lazuli, a blue crystal, in their burial rituals. They believed that this crystal would help them achieve immortality. Similarly, the ancient Greeks believed that certain crystals had the power to cure diseases.
The Science of Crystals
So what exactly are crystals? Crystals are made up of molecules that are arranged in a repeating pattern. This repeating pattern is what gives crystals their characteristic shape. For example, a quartz crystal has a six-sided shape because its molecules are arranged in a six-sided pattern.Crystal molecules are held together by chemical bonds. There are two types of chemical bonds that can hold molecules together: ionic bonds and covalent bonds. Ionic bonds occur when the molecules have different charges and are attracted to each other. Covalent bonds occur when the molecules share electrons and are held together by electromagnetic forces.
Not all materials can form crystals. In order for a material to form a crystal, it must have a regular arrangement of atoms or molecules. It must also be able to bond with other atoms or molecules in a specific way. For example, table salt (sodium chloride) can form crystals because its molecules have a regular arrangement and can bond with each other using ionic bonds.
Every day, we see nature deteriorating at an alarming rate. The climate is changing faster than ever before, with serious consequences for all life on Earth – including us! Wanting to help, we created Roe Garden to help conserve and restore biodiversity, the web of life that supports all on Earth. By donating 10% of our profits to WWF, we’re able to make a real difference in the fight against climate change and its effects on our planet. What we didn’t know was just how much our little garden would grow. But we’re not giving up without a fight. With your help, we can make a difference!
