Fluorite: The Pretty, Useful Mineral You Didn't Know
Chances are, you've seen fluorite before and didn't even know it. This pretty mineral comes in a wide range of colors, from deep purple to bright green, and is often used as a gemstone. But fluorite isn't just pretty—it's also useful.
How Is fluorite formed?
Fluorite is formed through a process known as hydrothermal vein mining. Hydrothermal vein mining is when hot water breaks through rocks and carries minerals back to the surface with it. When the water cools, it deposits the minerals in veins or cracks in the rock.
Fluorite can also be found in sedimentary rocks, which are rocks that have been formed by the deposition of sediment over time. However, this type of fluorite is not used commercially because it tends to be lower quality.
Where can find fluorite?
Fluorite can be found in a wide variety of rocks, including granite, slate, and sandstone. It typically forms in areas where there has been recent volcanic activity. For example, fluorite can often be found near lava flows or ash deposits from volcanoes.
Fluorite is a pretty, multi-colored mineral that has a wide range of uses. It is most commonly used as a gemstone, but it can also be used for making optical lenses and fluoride for dental products. If you're interested in collecting fluorite or using it for one of its many practical applications, keep an eye out for it the next time you're hiking or rock climbing!
Every day, we see nature deteriorating at an alarming rate. The climate is changing faster than ever before, with serious consequences for all life on Earth – including us!
