The Beauty of Peridotite

As anyone who loves crystals knows, each one is unique and special in its own way. But some stones are truly extraordinary, and peridotite is one of them. This beautiful green stone is relatively rare, and it has a fascinating history. Here's everything you need to know about peridotite.

What is Peridotite?

Peridotite is a type of igneous rock that is formed deep inside the Earth's mantle. It is made up of three main minerals: olivine, chromium, and nickel. Olivine is what gives peridotite its characteristic green color.

This stone is found in very few places around the world, including Norway, Pakistan, and the United States (namely, Hawaii and Arizona). In fact, peridotite is so rare that it is only mined in a handful of locations worldwide.

The History of Peridotite

Peridotite has been used for centuries, but it wasn't until the 19th century that it was properly identified as a distinct type of rock. The first peridotites were discovered in Norway in 1813 by mineralogist Jens Esmark. However, it wasn't until 1821 that this stone was given its name by French mineralogist René Just Haüy.

Haüy named this stone after the Greek word "peridona," which means "giving plenty." This name was chosen because peridotites are rich in olivine—the green mineral that gives this stone its distinctive color.

Uses for Peridotite

In addition to being used as a gemstone, peridotite has a number of other uses. For example, this stone is often used in jewelrymaking because of its durability and beauty. It is also used in construction because it is an excellent source of gravel and sand.

Peridotites are also used in the manufacturing of certain types of glass and ceramic products. They can even be used to make refractory bricks—bricks that are resistant to extremely high temperatures—for furnaces and kilns.

As you can see, peridotite is a truly unique and special stone. It has a rich history dating back centuries, and it has a wide range of uses. If you're lucky enough to find this stone, be sure to treasure it!
